Abstract

Objective: This study aims to estimate the costs of treatment and care for new smear- positive cases of pulmonary tuberculosis in Vietnam in 2011 from healthcare provider perspective. Methods: The present study employed the prevalence-based cost of illness approach. Data on average cost of treatment per case were collected from 145 patients in different hospitals and commune health centers in the North of Vietnam. Results: The mean of total cost of TB treatment is 129.225 million VND (95% CI: 112.468; 146.814). The deterministic sensitivity analysis shows that percentage of patients receiving the pilot 6- month-rifampicin regimen; length of hospitalization and the number of new smear- positive cases are the three main factors that contribute to the variability of TB treatment costs. Conclusions: The results help to provide more information for the policy makers in mobilization and allocation of financial resource for the NTP in Vietnam.
